1. The tail on the Black-Nosed Dace is like the tail on the woolly worm. Separate the yarn into a fluffy bundle a little longer than the hook, you will trim it later. Bind the tail down the length of the hook , from just behind the eye to the beginning of the bend of the hook to make a smooth, firm underbody for the tinsel. You can soak the yarn underbody with head cement before wrapping the tinsel. This makes the fly practically indestructible. |
2. Note the length of the tail. I like to tie it in longer then trim it after the underbody is tied in. Tie in both of the tinsels along the entire shaft of the hook this will help maintain a smooth underbody. |
3.Advance the flat tinsel to the eye of the hook keeping the wraps side by side so that none of the underlying thread can be seen, tie it off with a couple of turns of the thread.
4. Cover the flat tinsel with five to seven or eight evenly spaced wraps of the oval tinsel depending on the length of the hook then tie it off with a couple more wraps of thread. |
5.Select a small bunch of white buck tail or white craft fur that will extend twice the length of the hook from the tie in point behind the eye. Tie it in and trim so that you get a nice taper to help form the head. |
6. Select a small bunch of black bear fur or buck tail and tie it in so that it is shorter than the white. Taper the head.
7. Select a small bunch of brown bear fur or brown buck tail tie it in so that it is the same length as the white. Build up the head with thread wraps and whip finish.
8. This is the finished fly.
