Tri-County Fly Fishers

Tyer -- Ed Russell

The lightning bug wet fly is a fairly simple fly to tie and is very effective for bluegill. We think the best way to fish it is along weed bed edges, a line of stick-ups or other form of shallow-water cover. In most cases we use non-weighted models, but we always carry a few weighted flies in case we want to fish a little deeper. A slow steady retrieve with frequent quick, short jerks is hard to beat for attracting hungry bluegill.

Materials:
Thread: Black pre-waxed
Hook: Mustad 3960, sizes 10-12
Tail: Black goose biot
Abdomen: Pink, orange or yellow fluorescent yarn or chenille. Also silver sparkle chenille can be used
Thorax: Small black chenille
Hackle: Black hackle feather

1. Secure the in the vise and tie the thread to the hook shank. Tie back the goose biot fiber onto the hook shank above the barb to form a tail.

2. Tie in a short piece of fluorescent yarn or chenille at the point where the tail is tied on. Wrap the material forward about one-half way down the hook shank. Tie off the material and trim.

3. Tie in a short piece of small black chenille just ahead of the abdomen material.

4. Wind the small black chenille forward forming the thorax. Stop the wraps just behind the hook eye. Tie off the chenille and trim.

5. Tie in a black hackle feather with the concave side of the feather towards the hook shank, so the fibers flare back towards the hook bend when wound.

6. Make two or three turns of hackle around the hook shank, tie off and trim. Wrap the thread back over the hackle fiber bases just enough to make them flare backward over the thorax. Form the head, whip finish, trim and cement.
